Our Protein Oats are thicker and contain more starch than regular rolled oats. Because of this, they don't cook well in the microwave as the starch causes boil-overs. Stovetop cooking will give you the best results but if you cannot cook the oats on the stove, we suggest soaking the oats overnight and then microwaving them the next day to warm them up. As the oats soak, they will absorb water so that they only need to be heated to warm them before serving.
There’s definitely hulls in this product. This is concerning since most of these comments are 2 years old and I just recently purchased mine. Found 2 when cooking. Another got stuck in the back of my throat while eating it. I think next time I will sort through it. Also, not crazy about the liquid to oats ratio. Takes so long to cook. Will consider making them overnight next.
Hi Trish,
Thank you for your feedback and we can share this with our team. Oats are a natural agricultural product, and the texture and consistency of the oat can vary slightly from crop to crop, sometimes with more hulls being present, though we've taken steps to address excessive hulls. We have process controls and product inspection procedures in place to exclude as much of these materials as possible, but they often cannot be completely eliminated based on the technology used in the manufacturing process. If you need additional assistance, please feel free to contact our team at customerservice@bobsredmill.com. Thank you!
If you’ve figured out how to get 910 grams of protein into 48 grams of oats your math is not adding up! Might need to update the post.
Hi Molly, that is an error that we are working on fixing. It should be 9-10 grams of protien.
In one point on the page they say: "Just one serving of Organic Protein Oats provides 9 grams of plant-based protein, while one serving of Protein Oats offers 10 grams." I think they left the hyphen out of the 910. It should read "9-10 grams of protein". They seemed to have made the same mistake twice in the post.
Thank you for pointing that out! We are working on fixing that error. 9-10 grams is correct!
Can you make hot protein oats in an instant pot? I’ve only done old fashioned oats in the microwave but decided to try protein oats instead. Noticed its directions say bring water to boil add oats and cook for 15 minutes and microwave not recommended. Purchased mainly for overnight oats and hoping to also use for a nice morning bowl of oatmeal. Going to try it this am anyway.
Hi Patricia, we have not tried the Protein Oats in an Instant Pot but we hope they turned out!
Hi Jacob, thank you for the suggestion! I'll pass that to our decision makers.
Hello, is there a faster method of cooking the protein oat? Can they be done with adding hot water or in the microwave? Thanks!
Hi there Brittney! Because of the nature of these oats, they cannot be cooked with hot water or in the microwave. However, they do make great overnight oats. You could keep them in the fridge and they heat them on the stovetop fairly quickly in the morning.
What’s the milk to oat ratio for overnight oats using these?
Hi could you tell me if the plastic packaging is a good idea for the environment. Quaker uses a cardboard box. Just curious why this plastic is being used by a seemingly health conscious company like yourselves. Thank you. I love your products.
I second this! Indeed, surprising for a great company like you guys. Maybe something to change in the near future.
Thank you for your feedback! At Bob’s Red Mill, sustainability is very important to us. Packaging is an incredibly complex issue, and we are committed to sourcing responsibly, minimizing the impact of our packaging from a life-cycle perspective, and making science-based packaging decisions in partnership with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.
Our re-sealable bags are #7 packaging, are BPA, BPS, and Phthalate free and approved by the FDA for direct food contact. We continue to search for the best packaging materials that deliver on food safety, quality, durability, and sustainability.
Currently, we realize the number of waste management companies that are able to recycle the #7 packaging is limited. However, we are looking to find packaging that is more easily recyclable as well as sustainable. We do have a partnership with Ridwell, where customers can recycle Bob’s Red Mill packaging. You can read more about Ridwell’s service on their website here: https://www.ridwell.com/
Thank you again for your feedback!
